This was blog entry I posted on BOLS a while back, I copied it here because I liked what I wrote:
Convert. The cost is, for want of a better term, bloody ridiculous for bits of plastic.
Like Phase_Assassin, I'm fairly new to the hobby and it struck me as a hobby for those with more disposable income than I would ever have. That said though I have been really lucky with friends helping me out with bits and pieces and in a one case a whole army.
Still I must have spent nearly a grand in 8 months (paints, White Dwarves, Codices, models - I should tally it all up). But I have also spent time looking at the web and what others are doing and learning stuff myself.
If you have something that you can change into something else and it will look half decent (anything less than a third decent isn't good enough), have a go at it. I'd rather pay $29 NZD for a plastic model and a bit more on some green stuff and model putty (which I can then use for other jobs) to make something unique and special ('special' in different and not in like a kid who eats paste) than $80NZD on a Finecast figure every other bastard has.
Clean off the Ultramarines and paint them as as Imperial Fists? Make it so guns are mini magneted (spelling bad fail brain) and can be swipped and swapped.
Of course, my half decent converted army may not look as trim and sweet but its mine and it’s got the effort into it. And its likely that it'll get ground into the dirt because I am not that good at modelling so the flash conversions may be out of reach for a while but at least I still have some cash in my pocket and a smile on my face (due to fun that is being had as those that are spamming Grey Knights and Necron Annihilation Barges eat me alive).
Drafted 13-12-11.
