This is pretty amazing, its a real shame no one was around to see it. Brings to mind the scene in "The Time Machine" with Guy Pearce with the regular moon all broken up in the sky. Poetic and awe-inspiring at the same time.
Its interesting how the Moon has all these feminine and mythic connotations and I understand all the associations with tides and cycles and the hunt. It's the associated human response to give meaning and form and definition to things larger and more powerful than us. Even if its a human descriptor on a non-human object. Terry Pratchett calls it "anthropomorphic personification", his Death being the main recipient of the title.
I can see why the moon got it. It would also add more credence, at least in my eyes to the destruction of another Inner Planet, between Mars and Jupiter when relative gravitation forces tore it apart and created the asteroid belt. Interesting too that the largest asteroid, Ceres, is a harvest goddess.
